You Don't Have to Just Endure It

Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the most physically demanding experiences a human body goes through. As your baby grows, your center of gravity shifts, your pelvis widens, your ligaments loosen, and your spine adapts under increasing load. For many women, this leads to back pain, pelvic discomfort, sciatica, and other issues that can significantly affect quality of life.

The good news: you don't have to just accept this discomfort as part of pregnancy. Learn more about pregnancy-related discomfort and how chiropractic care can help. Prenatal chiropractic care is a safe, drug-free way to support your body through every stage of pregnancy — keeping you comfortable, mobile, and well.

At Path to Wellness Clinic of Chiropractic, Dr. Chitra Rajendran is Webster Technique Certified by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) — the most recognized certification in prenatal chiropractic care. She has helped many expectant mothers in Fleming Island and Clay County experience more comfortable pregnancies and smoother deliveries.

The Most Common Question

Is Chiropractic Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes — and many OBs and midwives actively encourage it. Prenatal chiropractic care has a strong safety record and is appropriate throughout all three trimesters, including the final weeks before your due date.

Dr. Chitra uses specialized techniques that avoid lying on your belly and apply no pressure to the abdomen. She uses pregnancy pillows and positioning aids to ensure your comfort and safety at every visit. Her techniques are gentle, controlled, and designed specifically for the pregnant body.

Some medications and interventions that might otherwise be used for pain management are not safe during pregnancy — chiropractic care offers a genuinely effective, completely drug-free alternative.

Common Pregnancy Discomforts

How Prenatal Chiropractic Can Help

Dr. Chitra addresses the physical changes and structural stresses of pregnancy to keep you comfortable through every trimester.

Lower Back Pain

The most common pregnancy complaint. As your belly grows and your center of gravity shifts forward, the lower back strains to compensate. Regular adjustments keep the lumbar spine properly aligned and muscles relaxed.

Pelvic Pain & SPD

Symphysis pubis dysfunction and pelvic girdle pain are common as ligaments loosen. The Webster Technique restores balance to the pelvis and its surrounding muscles and ligaments, providing significant relief.

Sciatica

The growing uterus and postural changes often compress the sciatic nerve, causing shooting pain down the leg. Chiropractic adjustments relieve this nerve compression naturally — without medication.

Hip Pain & Round Ligament Pain

As the pelvis widens, many women experience hip pain and round ligament discomfort. Gentle adjustments and soft tissue work help the body adapt more comfortably to these rapid changes.

Postural Changes & Upper Back Tension

Increased breast size and postural shifts lead to upper back and neck tension. Adjustments help your spine adapt to these changes, reducing discomfort and muscle fatigue throughout pregnancy.

Nausea & Overall Wellness

Improved spinal alignment and nervous system function can help reduce pregnancy-related nausea — particularly in the first trimester — and supports your overall sense of well-being throughout pregnancy.

Our Specialized Approach

The Webster Technique

Dr. Chitra uses the Webster Technique — a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment developed specifically for pregnant women. The technique focuses on the sacrum and pelvis, reducing sacroiliac joint dysfunction and balancing the surrounding muscles and ligaments.

A properly balanced pelvis creates more space and optimal conditions for your baby to move into the best position for birth. Many mothers and their birth providers report smoother, shorter labors when the pelvis has been properly balanced throughout pregnancy.

Dr. Chitra is certified in the Webster Technique through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association — the gold standard in prenatal chiropractic training.

Your Prenatal Journey

What to Expect at Your Prenatal Chiropractic Visits

Every visit is structured around your comfort, your trimester, and the physical demands your body is managing at that moment in your pregnancy.

01

Before You Arrive

Simple Preparation

No special preparation is needed. Complete online intake forms if possible. Note your current trimester, your primary complaints (lower back pain, pelvic pressure, sciatica, hip pain, etc.), your OB's name if you'd like Dr. Chitra to communicate with them, and any concerns about specific movements or positions. Wear comfortable, loose clothing. If you have any OB notes about activity restrictions, bring them. Most importantly: you do not need your OB's permission to see a chiropractor, though Dr. Chitra is happy to coordinate with your provider.

02

Your First Visit

Complete Prenatal Evaluation

Your first visit is a full evaluation — approximately 45–60 minutes. Dr. Chitra takes a thorough pregnancy and health history, asks about your specific symptoms, sleep position, activity level, and delivery goals. She performs a standing postural assessment and gentle spinal and pelvic evaluation using positioning appropriate for your trimester. No lying flat on your back after the first trimester. Pregnancy bolsters and positioning aids are used throughout. By the end of this visit, you have a clear picture of what's contributing to your discomfort and a personalized care plan.

03

Ongoing Care

Adapted to Each Trimester

Every visit is adjusted to where you are in your pregnancy. First trimester care focuses on establishing pelvic balance and addressing early postural shifts. Second trimester visits address the rapid changes in center of gravity and increasing lower back load. Third trimester care — the most critical period — focuses on sacropelvic balance, uterine round ligament tension, and optimal positioning for delivery. Many patients maintain weekly visits in the final 4–6 weeks of pregnancy. Dr. Chitra serves expectant mothers from Fleming Island, Oakleaf, Orange Park, Middleburg, and throughout Clay County.

04

Postpartum

Recovery & Restoration

The weeks after delivery are a critical window for restoring normal pelvic and spinal alignment as the relaxin hormone decreases and joints restabilize. Delivery places significant force on the pelvis — both vaginal and cesarean births create different but real spinal stresses. Breastfeeding posture creates upper back and neck strain that compounds quickly. Dr. Chitra recommends a postpartum check within 4–6 weeks of delivery. Many patients bring their newborns for a pediatric evaluation at the same visit.

Consult Your OB First If You Have:

These conditions warrant a brief conversation with your OB or midwife before beginning chiropractic care. In most cases, Dr. Chitra can proceed with their knowledge — she is happy to communicate with your provider directly.

  • Threatened or active preterm labor
  • Vaginal bleeding of unknown cause

When in doubt, call us. Dr. Chitra will give you an honest assessment of whether chiropractic is appropriate for your specific situation — and will always work in collaboration with your OB or midwife.

Your Questions Answered

Prenatal Chiropractic FAQ

Common questions from expectant mothers in Fleming Island, Oakleaf, Orange Park, Middleburg, and throughout Clay County.

Yes — prenatal chiropractic has a strong safety record across all three trimesters, including the final weeks before delivery. Many OBs and midwives actively recommend chiropractic care for their pregnant patients. Dr. Chitra uses specialized techniques and positioning that avoid any pressure on the abdomen, uses pregnancy pillows and bolsters for all prone positioning, and applies no-twist cervical techniques appropriate for the pregnant body. Chiropractic is one of the few effective pain management options that is safe throughout pregnancy — many medications are not.
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment protocol developed by Dr. Larry Webster and certified through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). It focuses on the sacrum and pelvis — addressing sacroiliac joint dysfunction and releasing tension in the surrounding muscles and uterine round ligaments. A properly balanced pelvis creates more space and optimal conditions for your baby to move into the best position for birth. Dr. Chitra is Webster Technique Certified through the ICPA, making her one of the most credentialed prenatal chiropractors in Clay County.
Frequency depends on your trimester, symptoms, and goals. For wellness and preventive pelvic balance in the first and second trimester, every 3–4 weeks is typical. In the third trimester, as the body changes more rapidly and pelvic pressure increases, every 1–2 weeks is common and often very beneficial. For acute back pain or sciatica during pregnancy, more frequent initial visits (2–3 times per week) may be recommended until symptoms stabilize. Dr. Chitra creates a personalized schedule at your first visit.
The Webster Technique reduces uterine constraint caused by sacral misalignment and round ligament tension, creating more space and optimal conditions for the baby to position itself naturally. Many OBs and midwives refer patients specifically for Webster Technique care when a baby is in a breech or suboptimal position. Dr. Chitra works alongside your obstetric provider and is happy to communicate with your care team. Clinical experience and research suggest a meaningful positive effect on baby positioning — though outcomes vary and are not guaranteed.
Ideally, in the first trimester — when the relaxin hormone begins loosening ligaments and the body starts adapting to pregnancy's physical demands. Starting early establishes a healthy pelvic baseline and can prevent many of the discomforts that develop as pregnancy progresses. That said, chiropractic care is beneficial at any stage. Many patients come for the first time in the third trimester for relief from late-pregnancy pain and pelvic preparation for delivery — it is never too late to benefit.
Clinical experience and patient reports consistently suggest that maintaining pelvic balance throughout pregnancy is associated with more comfortable labors. A properly balanced pelvis allows the baby optimal space for descent and rotation during labor. Many of Dr. Chitra's patients and their birth providers report positive delivery experiences following regular prenatal care. Learn more about the Webster Technique and its role in delivery preparation.
Postpartum chiropractic care is strongly recommended. Delivery places significant stress on the pelvis and lumbar spine — both vaginal and cesarean births create different but real spinal stresses. As the relaxin hormone decreases after birth, the body's joints restabilize, and this is an important window for ensuring everything settles in proper alignment. Breastfeeding and new-parent posture create significant upper back and neck strain. Dr. Chitra recommends a postpartum check within 4–6 weeks of delivery.
