Cupping Therapy for Wellness

Patient undergoing the cupping services provided by Dr. Chitra Rajendran.

What is Cupping?

Cupping involves employing myofascial decompression through the application of suction to the skin and fascia using small cups and a plunging device. Different-sized cups are positioned on the affected area, and a plunger tool is utilized to generate negative pressure by extracting air from the cups. This process raises the skin and fascia, promoting increased blood flow to the targeted region.

How does it feel?

Cupping is typically a soothing experience that is not commonly associated with pain. The sensation felt is often described as a gentle pulling of the skin when the cup is rolled. Following the cup's removal, individuals usually encounter redness or a warm sensation, indicative of heightened blood circulation in the treated area.

Who can benefit from Cupping?

Cupping is a versatile therapy with potential benefits for nearly anyone. It proves beneficial in addressing issues such as limited mobility, muscle tightness, scars, and various conditions like headaches, tendinitis, bursitis, plantar fasciitis, fibromyalgia, as well as in the release of trigger points.

Benefits of Cupping Therapy:

  • Release fascial adhesions and scar tissue
  • Improve blood circulation and lymph circulation
  • Reduce trigger points that are painful
  • Relieve pain
  • Promote range of motion and mobility
  • Reduce toxins

What to expect following treatment?

Mild soreness is expected due to the buildup of lactic acid in the muscle tissue. Red or even dark purple discoloration on the area being treated is expected. Although these marks may look like bruises, they are not bruises; Cupping does not cause tissue damage like a bruise does. After a cupping session, individuals often experience a range of sensations, such as heightened fatigue or increased energy, fluctuations in hunger, drowsiness, or occasional irritability. Additionally, some people may feel emotionally charged after cupping, as the therapy has the potential to release tension and emotions that may have been held in the muscles. It's important to note that these responses are entirely normal as this is the immune system's brief response to cellular waste that cupping helps discharge.

What to avoid after cupping treatment?

In the 4-6 hours following cupping, it's advisable to steer clear of the following:

  1. Caffeine, alcohol, sugary meals and drinks, dairy, and processed meats. These foods can slow down your body's ability to process the therapy.
  2. Avoid hot showers, saunas, hot tubs, and air conditioning during this period. The areas where the cups were applied may be more sensitive to warmth after cupping, so it's important to allow time for your skin to recover. If possible, opt for filtered water in your shower to prevent introducing unnecessary chemicals to your skin.
  3. Refrain from engaging in intense exercise.
  4. Avoid exposure to cold and windy conditions.
